At least 20 die as Shah Hussain Express train crashes into coaster

Sheikhupura's Rescue 1122 teams reached the site and an operation was underway to provide medical aid to the injured people and shift them to the hospital.

A Lahore-bound train rammed into a passenger coaster at a railway crossing near Farooq Abad railway station in Sheikhupura on Friday, killing at least 20 people, mainly Sikh pilgrims, and injuring several others, reported ARY News. They had come to Nankana Sahib from Peshawar.

Sheikhupura resident Dilbir Singh said the pilgrims, after visiting the shrine and before leaving for Peshawar, had also visited the home of a relative whose family member recently died. "The ETPB security had escorted them till the limits of Nankana Sahib", ETPB spokesperson Amir Hashmi told PTI.

Their driver took a chance as a train headed towards them at the crossing near the small city of Farooqabad, but the bus skidded and got stuck on the trainline.

The railway crossing was closed at the time of the crash, according to the official.

"On their way back to Peshawar their high-roof van collided with a train near Sacha Sauda Farooqabad Sheikhupura". As many as 19 Sikhs, including women were killed.

"District administration, emergency services and health department are providing best possible care and treatment to injured passengers", Buzdar said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was pained by the tragic demise of Sikh pilgrims in a road accident in Pakistan on Friday.

Ghazi Salahuddin, the district police chief, said the dead and injured were taken to a nearby hospital.

Railways Minister Sheikh Rashid has ordered authorities to take immediate action against those responsible for the accident.
