While Apple News Today is for all users, News+ subscribers will be the exclusive recipients of new audio stories Apple is commissioning. News+ audio stories will be a great fit for me too, since my queue of saved stories is longer than I can ever get through on my own.

It's a format that sounds identical to the New York Times' popular "The Daily" podcast. Apple's show is called Apple News Today, and it will be hosted by Apple News editors Shumita Basu and Duarte Geraldino.

Apple says the update also fixes an issue where certain USB mouse and trackpads could lose connection, which is a problem that was affecting USB 2.0 devices that were used with new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models. This allows you to control a compatible automobile using your handset. Apple says your listening will sync across devices, so you can start on your iPhone and pick up where you left off in your auto. As someone who uses Apple News every day, and happily subscribe to News+, I love the additions of audio features and local news resources found in this release.

The company also added "curated local news collections beginning in five cities and regions" - San Francisco and the greater Bay Area, Houston, Los Angeles and NY - and promised to expand into other areas. Those local news collections will rely on a major newspaper in each area. The move by Apple comes less than a month after the New York Times said it was pulling out of Apple News, saying the distribution of its content wasn't compatible with the Times' direct-to-consumer business. "In Canada, leading French-language newspaper Le Devoir is now available to Apple News+ subscribers, and The Globe and Mail, one of the country's most prestigious national newspapers, will be available to subscribers later this summer". Apple News Plus is available in the USA for $9.99 per month, Canada for $12.99 per month, the United Kingdom for £9.99 per month, and in Australia for $14.99 AUD per month.

Apple News Today can be enjoyed from the new Audio tab of the News app, or it can optionally be subscribed to as a podcast in Apple Podcasts. Other new features include the new Symptoms section in the Health app, and the ability to remember the reading position of a user in the Apple News app. Apple is also bringing support for Apple News in the CarPlay mode, and users can listen to audio stories and Apple News Today in their cars while they're driving. This release also includes bug fixes and improvements.
