This Registry trick lets you block major Windows 10 updates

The Windows Team removed the option where one could defer to upgrade to the next feature update for nearly a year.

There are now two ways for users to defer Windows 10 update installs under the new system, which Microsoft says is created to "prevent confusion".

While users can still manage update deferrals using Group Policy, Microsoft has recently mentioned a new Windows policy called 'TargetReleaseVersionInfo' that prevents Windows 10 feature updates from being installed.

Windows 10 now has an official undelete tool which is available for download via the Microsoft Store, although note that this initial incarnation looks like it's still a beta.

There are two ways to achieve this.

The Windows File Recovery tool can already be downloaded from the Microsoft Store, HERE. That's not bad, but not a patch on what was available Windows 10 Pro users.

With Windows 10's May 2019 Update, Microsoft introduced the ability to defer all Windows 10 updates, including feature updates, for up to 35 days via the Windows Update settings. From here, right-click on "Windows Update", select "New" then "DWORD (32-bit- Value)', use "TargetReleaseVersion" as the name and set the value to '1".

Enable this policy to specify a Feature Update version to be requested in subsequent scans. Every program you install to a drive after accidentally deleting a file reduces the likelihood that it can be restored, because the data can get permanently overwritten. It works like other un-delete utilities, in that it scours your disk drive for erased files and attempts to restore them.

The value should be the exact number as in the semi-annual channel list in the link above. Don't power down or restart your computer.

Of course, as long as everything goes to plan with the latest Windows 10 updates, it shouldn't even be an issue.

"If you wish to continue leveraging deferrals, you can use local Group Policy (Computer Configuration Administrative Templates Windows Components Windows Update Windows Update for Business Select when Preview builds and Feature Updates are received or Select when Quality Updates are received)".

I hope the post helps you stop Windows 10 from upgrading to the next version.
