Then the customer, Amber Lynn Gilles, took a photo of him.

In the customer's post, Amber Lynn Gilles said barista Lenin Gutierrez refused to serve her when she entered without a face covering.

"When I recognized who it was I just believed 'wow, she genuinely blasted me on Facebook, '" Gutierrez instructed CNN.

The post sparked more than 107,000 reactions and comments and almost 50,000 shares.

Why face mask guidance has changed so much

At this time, Gutierrez is not speaking to the media, but has authorized Matt Cowan - who started the GoFundMe campaign - to speak on his behalf.

Instead of getting sympathy, the internet responded by sending Gutierrez more than $36,000 in tips as of this writing (via The Washington Post).

Matt Cowan began a GoFundMe campaign to tip Gutierrez for "standing his ground when faced with a Karen in the wild".

"I just wanted to say thank you for all the love and support and what everyone is doing, it's an honor to see all this happen", he said while fittingly wearing a mask.

The initial goal of the campaign is $ 1,000 - but less than a week later, thousands of people have donated almost $ 80,000. "Make sure you go live on Facebook so that everyone can witness the public humiliation in its entirety, and bring a step stool as well; it's going to be a mother on your ankles when you come down off your high horse", said another user.

Gutierrez said he will use the cash to pursue his dream of dancing and teaching children to dance - he added: "From the bottom of my heart thank you so much, it is just fantastic to see that I can actually make these dreams pursuing more into dance a thing now". He also wants to donate to some businesses in the San Diego group.

Gutierrez asked her if she had a face mask and was about to show her the company and California's public health mandate of face masks, when Giles launched a tirade of abuse, or as Gutierrez said, "cursing up a storm".

The California Section of Community Wellbeing (CDPH) documented a single working day raise of 5,972 positive scenarios of coronavirus, with 60 fatalities from Friday to Saturday, in accordance to an update released Saturday morning.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone "should put on a tissue screen when they go out in public" to reduce transmission and slow the spread of coronavirus, which is highly contagious. The state's outbreak is now second only to New York's.

But some argue that the act of wearing a mask is political, and that wearing one violates their civil liberties.

President Donald Trump recently told the The Wall Street Journal that masks are "a double-edged sword" and suggested that masks are being worn as a political statement, rather than a health precaution, to show disapproval of him.

A Starbucks barista is set to be rewarded with more than $58k (around €52k) in tips after a customer tried to shame him for refusing to serve her because she was not wearing a face mask. They can also order delivery.
