David Dorn, a 77-year-old former cop who had spent half his life on the Missouri force, was shot dead on the sidewalk in front of a pawnshop early Tuesday amid violent protests after the Minnesota police-brutality killing of George Floyd - and several people, including a state pol, said they watched Dorn's murder unfold in a clip on the social media platform, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch said.

Trump has condemned the killing of George Floyd, a 46-year-old African American who died after a white policeman pinned his neck under a knee for almost nine minutes in Minneapolis on May 25, and has promised justice.

The chaos in St. Louis followed continued protests Monday in Missouri over the death of George Floyd and police treatment of African Americans, with gatherings also held in Kansas City and Jefferson City.

The Ethical Society of Police, which represents black officers in St. Louis, said in a news release that Dorn was 'the type of brother that would've given his life to save them if he had to'.

"We have had 4 officers struck by gunfire tonight", the St. Louis Police Department said on Twitter. All four men were expected to recover.

"He was very dedicated to youth, especially disadvantaged youth", said Fitch, who led the St Louis County Police Department from 2009 to 2014.

Saying the identity of the shooter or shooters is unknown, Hayden said: "I believe some coward randomly shot at the police line". He pledged to take legal action if Trump carried out his military threat. "We will honour him".

Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser, in a separate MSNBC interview on Tuesday, said there were no signs of active duty United States military in the city overnight.

Then, President Donald Trump walked down the street to St. John's Church, seemingly for a photo-op with a bible.

The development comes St. Louis confirmed four officers were shot by gunfire after peaceful protests turned violent overnight, with rioters stealing goods and setting buildings ablaze in the downtown area.

Mayor Bill de Blasio has moved the curfew Tuesday to 8 p.m.

In Hollywood, dozens of people were shown in TV images looting a drug store. Windows were shattered at a nearby Starbucks and two restaurants. The report says three officers contributed to his death.

- An autopsy commissioned for Floyd's family found that he died of asphyxiation from neck and back compression. Three other officers involved in the arrest have not been charged. The National Guard deployed in 23 states and Washington, DC.
