A German man has been identified as a suspect in the disappearance of British girl Madeleine McCann, detectives have revealed.

Police believe a 43-year-old German prisoner who travelled around Portugal in a camper van was in the area where the three-year-old was last seen.

In a statement announcing the new suspect, who is now in prison in Germany for an unrelated matter, police said the suspect had a telephone conversation that ended just over an hour before the child went missing.

He is connected to the area of Praia da Luz and surrounding regions, and spent some short spells in Germany.

An appeal for information was made for anyone who recognised the numbers, the camper van and also a Jaguar auto linked to the man.

"There is information suggesting that he also earned his living by committing criminal offences, such as burglaries of hotel complexes and holiday flats as well as trafficking in narcotic drugs", added German police.

He was described as being white, with short blonde hair, possibly fair, and being of around six foot tall.

- October 24: Portuguese police confirm that a review of their original investigation has uncovered new lines of inquiry, and they reopen the case.

"We will never give up hope of finding Madeline alive".

Their investigation has looked at more than 600 people who they believe or believed may be significant and in 2013 four male suspects were identified.

"Extensive enquiries have led investigators to believe the suspect was using this number and received a call, starting at 7.32pm and finishing at 8.02pm on 3 May 2007", a police spokesman said. "Somebody knows something", said Cranwell.

Welcoming the appeal launched in conjunction with British police, the girl's parents Kate and Gerry McCann said in a statement that: "All we have ever wanted is to find her, uncover the truth and bring those responsible to justice".

"You may know, you may be aware of some of the things he has done".

Her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, have endured 13 years of hell.

"We would like to thank the general public for their ongoing support and encourage anyone who has information directly related to the appeal, to contact the police". I'm appealing to you directly.

Nothing was amiss when Mr McCann checked the children just after 9pm that night, but when his wife went back at about 10pm Madeleine had gone from the apartment at 5A Rua Dr Agostinho da Silva.

"He is now in prison and this might be a good time to come forward and talk to the police".

Detectives also want to speak with anyone who saw the van together with the Jaguar, or individually, during the spring and summer of 2007.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Cundy said the investigation into the suspect had seen detectives sent to Portugal and Germany.
