Red Notices are the highest-level arrest request that Interpol issues and "are issued for fugitives wanted either for prosecution or to serve a sentence".

The usual suspects have commented on the arrest warrant, including 50 Cent who actually sent a so-called message from the President to Iran. Citing Tehran prosecutor Ali Alqasi Mehr, Fars said, "US President Donald Trump stands at the top of the list and will be prosecuted as soon as he stands down [from his] presidency after his term ends".

Gen. Qassem Soleimani was the Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander who was revered in Iran and known for being the mastermind behind many conflicts in the region and against the U.S. He did not become widely known to most Americans until his assassination by a U.S. drone strike in Baghdad on January 3.

Soleimani, killed in a drone attack on January 3 near Baghdad International Airport, was commander of the Revolutionary Guard Corps' expeditionary Quds Force and is regarded as a national hero in Iran. In a statement issued to CNN, Interpol said it "would not consider requests of this nature" and said it was against the organization's constitution to "undertake any intervention or activities of a political, military, religious or racial character".

"General Soleimani was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region", the Pentagon said at the time, calling the strike "decisive defensive" action aimed at deterring future Iranian attacks.

A retaliatory attack by Iran came on Jan 8, just days after the USA airstrike.

Iran retaliated by firing a volley of ballistic missiles at United States troops stationed in Iraq, but Trump opted against responding militarily. As NPR reported, dozens of American personnel were later diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries in the attack.

Tensions between the two countries have escalated since the USA withdrew from a 2015 nuclear deal and reimposed harsh economic sanctions that have crippled Iran's economy.
