The 27-second video, which was posted to Twitter, shows an NYPD truck in front of a crowd throwing objects at the vehicle.

At least one protester attempted to throw a homemade firebomb into a police auto with four officers inside, the police said.

Tension has continued to escalate as people protest the death of George Floyd.

The police commissioner also noted that, as with the Shader sisters, police are seeing some people from out of town come into the city during protests to commit violence. "We can do better than this", Shea said.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said the incident is under investigation, but emphasized that the officers may have had no other choice.

CNN has reached out to the NYPD, New York governor and Attorney General's office for comment.

"I voted in every election, city, state, national, and I always read the news, but it's been decades and nothing has changed, so I don't know how much these protests help but I know everything else I've done hasn't. for me it's rage and exhaustion" one protester, Lucy Saintcyr, said as she headed home on the bus.

"Our country has a sickness", said Brianna Petrisko, among those demonstrating earlier in the day in lower Manhattan. "This is the only way we're going to be heard".

In Brooklyn, thousands of protesters took to the Prospect Heights arena.

"That's unacceptable and we need to understand exactly why that happened and there needs to be accountability", he said. "And the demand is for justice", Cuomo said.

However, de Blasio did not condone police acts against peaceful protestors, and said that elected officials at the protests had been pepper sprayed.

Tensions flared in NY on Saturday as thousands gathered across the city to protest against the killing of 46-year-old African American George Floyd, who died on Monday after being pinned to the ground and suffocated by a Minneapolis police official.
