Florida governor Ron DeSantis (R.) blasted the media on Wednesday for predicting his state would be ravaged by coronavirus as severely as NY.

"We believe that this makes sense based on the data and observed experience", DeSantis said. "They've got, like 5,000-plus fatalities".

DeSantis said this is effective immediately.

DeSantis said that in Florida, no one under the age of 25 has died from COVID-19, while the number of COVID-19-related deaths in people age 90 or above has exceeded the number of COVID-19-related deaths in people under 65.

Despite having similar size populations, the difference in coronavirus deaths between NY and Florida is stark.

"This virus has a disproportionate impact on the elderly", DeSantis said.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer similarly lifted requirements that nursing homes establish special coronavirus units and admit from the hospital patients who were recovering from COVID-19, giving the facilities more flexibility to decide if they can safely isolate people.

The Vice President and Governor will be discussing Florida's phased economic reopening plans, as well as delivering PPE such as face masks to a nursing home as part of a larger initiative across the country.

"Most of the experts say if this is going to come back because we moved too soon, it will take several months before that happens - July, August, September, October". "When you do that and you overcook it, you end up getting less compliance with it".
