COVID-19 survivor, male nurse shares shocking transformation pictures

But after dropping 50 pounds amid the ravages of COVID-19, Schultz chose to share two images to his 30,000 Instagram followers - one taken about a month before he fell ill, the other snapped at a Boston hospital. The post also included before and after photos documenting the dramatic change that his body went through during the ordeal.

Within two days his temperature spiked and he struggled to breath, resulting in Mike being rushed to hospital, where he ended up being intubated for four and a half weeks, as reported by BuzzFeed. He wanted to share the lasting impact COVID-19 can have on people who are otherwise considered healthy to encourage others to take the virus seriously.

A week before, they had been to a festival in Miami Beach where at least 38 people later contracted COVID-19 and three men died. Several cases have since been linked to that festival.

Schultz said that he and Hebblethwaite received some negative criticism online for attending the Winter Party. "It can affect you", Mr Schultz told BuzzFeed News.

'I didn't think it was as serious as it was until after things started happening, ' he said.

"I thought I was young enough for it not to affect me, and I know a lot of people think that", he confessed to BuzzFeed News.

Two days after arriving back in Boston, both Schultz and his boyfriend started feeling sick. The photo on the right was taken in a recovery ward.

"I was so weak", he said. He could not hold his cellphone and felt it was heavy. "I couldn’t type, because my hands shook so much", he recalled. According to Schultz, he took the photo standing up and had already felt exhausted after a couple of minutes of doing so.

Schultz's friends supported him from afar and launched a GoFundMe page to help cover the costs of his lengthy hospital stay. Getting stronger every day and working to increase my lung capacity.

Symptoms can include fever, cough and difficulty breathing - very similar to a cold or flu.

In a survey of over 2,500 people, nearly half of those questioned endorsed to some degree the idea that "COVID-19 is a bioweapon developed by China to destroy the West" and around one-fifth endorsed to some degree that "Jews have created the virus to collapse the economy for financial gain". People most at risk of this include older adults and people with severe chronic medical conditions like heart, lung or kidney disease.

The study concludes: "A public health information crisis may be observable".
