Thomas Foley, Tripp's son-in-law, told the New York Post she had died from an illness that was not related to the coronavirus.

Upon hearing the news of Tripp's condition, Lewinsky expressed "hope for her recovery" and sympathy for Tripp's family.

The Tripp tapes became a key component of independent counsel Ken Starr's probe into Clinton, and made her a high-profile figure throughout the impeachment saga. "I was eviscerated. Not only by President Clinton and his wife, but also by the mainstream media", she wrote for Breitbart years later.

Tripp had worked as a White House secretary during the administration of President George H W Bush and stayed on for the first two years of the Clinton presidency, in 1993 and 1994.

"Linda, if I ever want to have an affair with a married man again, especially if he's President, please shoot me", Lewinsky told Tripp during one of the taped conversations. He was impeached by the House in December 1998, and acquitted by the Senate in February 1999.

Tripp has been seriously ill and on her deathbed Tuesday night, according to a Facebook posting by her daughter.

Lewinsky tweeted words of support for Tripp's family earlier on Wednesday. She had been treated for breast cancer in the past. In 2018, she appeared at National Whistleblower Day in Washington, discuss her actions.

Testifying at the Clinton trial in 1998, Ms Lewinsky's concluding remarks had been: "I'm really sorry for everything that's happened, and I hate Linda Tripp".

The sex scandal precipitated Mr Clinton's impeachment by the Republican-led House of Representatives in 1998, when he was found to have committed perjury for lying about the relationship.

After that she moved to Middleburg, Virginia where she operated a Christmas store, The Christmas Sleigh, with her second husband Dieter Rausch.
