Kennedy Granddaughter and 8-Year-Old Son Missing After Canoe Accident

Maryland's Department of Natural Resources police said in a statement that "the preliminary investigation revealed that the pair may have been paddling the canoe from a residence ... out into the bay to retrieve a ball and were unable to paddle back to shore".

According to the Washington Post, Maeve's husband David confirmed that his wife and son were canoeing on the Chesapeake Bay Thursday, and have not been seen since.

The shock news came after the mother and eight-year-old son went missing whilst on a boat trip. McKean is the granddaughter of Senator Robert F Kennedy McKean and the grand-niece of former president John F Kennedy.

His wife and son "popped into a canoe to chase it down", he told the newspaper.

Maryland authorities said an overturned canoe matching the description of the Kennedy's had been recovered. Kennedy, and niece of the late President John F. Kennedy.

Past year another of Robert Kennedy's granddaughters, Saoirse Kennedy Hill, died from an apparent overdose aged just 22.

Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean is the executive director of the Georgetown University Global Health Initiative.

By Friday afternoon, the Coast Guard reportedly had covered 2,275 square miles of water in search of the pair.

"I reached out to, and spoke with lieutenant governor Townsend this morning and on behalf of the people of Maryland, I expressed our most heartfelt sympathies and prayers to her and to her entire family during this hard time", Hogan said.

"An intensive search has been underway since late yesterday", he said.

"People think, because I'm a Kennedy, I'm extremely wealthy and don't flaunt it. Ha!"

Ms McKean described her enthusiasm for public service in a 2008 interview with Glamour magazine, but played down the advantage of her Kennedy name. "We're fortunate compared to the average American, but to think I'm a trust fund kid - so not true!"
