Over three-quarter of the cases (3,867) are in Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.

DeSantis made the shelter-in-place order official during a press conference at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium, where health officials have been conducting drive-thru COVID-19 tests.

"The better you do, the faster this whole nightmare will end", the President said at a White House news conference Sunday. This is a turnaround from last week when Trump said he wanted to "open the economy back up" by Easter (April 12).

There are now 15 cases in Walton County, 35 in Okaloosa County, six in Bay County, two in Jackson County, and 1 in Washington County. DeSantis' order suspends that requirement. Jose Javier Rodriguez, who represents Florida's 37th district, said a "patchwork approach" won't work.

According to Florida's COVID-19 Data and Surveillance Dashboard, more than 5,400 COVID-19 cases have been reported, with 63 deaths.

"Because we remain so far behind on testing, we can not know how far behind we also are in trying to catch up with the virus as it spreads", Rodriguez said. "Counties like Lee, for example, have medical professionals urging for a safer-at-home order, reminding us why a statewide order is the best approach".

Monroe County has set up a checkpoint on USA 1 to limit automobile travel into the Florida Keys to residents and essential personnel.

At the checkpoints, motorists from the targeted states are required to complete forms that include contact information and trip details.

He said this area of Florida is the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in Florida because of its large number of worldwide travelers.

Gov. Ron DeSantis says he will soon issue an executive order allowing retired law enforcement and healthcare workers to return to the workforce to fight COVID-19.

"We need to have folks that are willing to return to service", DeSantis said.
