New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has issued a stark warning that the city's healthcare system has nine days before potential collapse under the strain of the coronavirus pandemic unless urgent measures are taken.

"We're seeing a significant increase in deaths because the length of time people are on the ventilator is increasing, and the more it increases, the higher the level of deaths will increase", Cuomo said.

President Donald Trump: "I don't believe you need 40,000 or 30,000 ventilators".

Mr. de Blasio said they have 2,500 ventilators but that the city needs 15,000.

Saying that there are almost 2,500 ventilators in New York City, the mayor stressed the city needs 15,000 more, while the state needs 30,000.

The top priority of the state, which is seeing the highest number of positive cases in the country, is creating more beds and getting more ventilators.

The number of US cases of coronavirus reached 81,378, the Reuters tally showed.

Sites now being studied in the city include the Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens' South Ozone Park, the Port Authority-owned Brooklyn Cruise Terminal in Red Hook, the CUNY College of Staten Island, and the New York Expo Center in Hunts Point in the Bronx.

New York City is home to 1,700 basketball courts. He said the city would not release those accused of violent crimes. He projects over half of Americans in the city will contract the coronavirus.

"It's still doubling, and that's still bad news", Cuomo said.

"So we've got something and I'm thankful for that". The U.S. has now 1,438 fatalities from the epidemic, while more than 810 people recovered so far.

Outside New York and New Orleans, other hot spots appeared to be emerging around the country, including Houston and Detroit. He says playing with the people you live with it is fine or shooting hoops by yourself, but taking part in a pick up game will not be tolerated. That number rose to 3,800 Wednesday and then leaped to 5,300 by Thursday morning.
