New York Governor Andrew Cuomo Holds Coronavirus Press Conference

NY has 30,811 declared cases, up by 5,146, Cuomo said on Wednesday. The federal government sent the state 4,000 earlier this week but nationwide supplies have been completely depleted.

Mr Cuomo said the single greatest challenge now was the number of ventilators. New York's share, according to Lever, is 1.9 percent of its total state budget.

"To everyone who has left NY over the past few days, because of the rate of infection, you may have been exposed before you left. The story cited a RealClearPolitics column that stated in 2015, Cuomo had a health task force "draft rules for rationing the ventilators they already had" instead of buying 16,000 new ventilators".

"By the middle of May, we could be making hundreds of thousands of ventilators", Hackett said.

"They could have had 15 or 16,000 two years ago and all they had to do was order them". NY has purchased 7,000 more, and the federal government is sending an additional 4,000, for a total of 15,000. Instead, the 2015 report acknowledged that NY should instead prepare for a moderate scenario and rely on federal resources if faced with a severe scenario. "But we think this is a very strong, strong medicine for NY to help fight the economic and health care crises caused by corona".

Testing for the virus remained a challenge in NY and around the United States.

U.S. Senate leaders have reached a deal with the White House on an unprecedented $2 trillion stimulus package to battle economic freefall caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The report also indicated that they would lack the staffing to even operate as many ventilators as would be required, "and purchasing additional ventilators beyond a threshold will not save additional lives, because there will not be a sufficient number of trained staff to operate them".

The world missed the first opportunity to control the virus, but now there is a second opportunity to act, World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said during a media briefing in Geneva on Wednesday. "Read the fact checkers on it".

Mr. Cuomo said he spoke to the state's congressional delegation Wednesday morning and that he wants something closer to House Democrats' ante, which he said provided $17 billion to NY state.

"There is no state in the United States that bought ventilators for the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic". But he said the state does not have enough for the expected need in a few weeks, when the virus peaks. Even then, the report found, the NY would be 15,000 ventilators short.

Cuomo said health officials anticipate about 120,000 coronavirus patients coming into New York's hospitals, which have a capacity of 50,000 beds.

But the Senate rebels argued that the $600 weekly extra benefit during the virus crisis, combined with standard unemployment payments, would surpass full salaries for many low-wage workers, potentially incentivizing layoffs. If it came between two patients who had the same diagnosis, the triage committee would randomly pick - like a lottery.

The Senate was to convene at noon (1700 GMT) and vote on the bill, which will then go to the House of Representatives and on to President Donald Trump for his signature.

Cuomo attributed this to many people arriving from China, Italy and South Korea, where many cases have been reported, and also to the high population density in his state, although he said this is his personal opinion.
