In addition to the death of the minor, officials confirmed that there have been an additional 128 cases of coronavirus in the county that brought the total amount of cases to 662.

Public health officials in California's Los Angeles county announced what is believed to be the first US death of a patient under 18 years old from the COVID-19 coronavirus on Tuesday.

The other two patients were between 50 and 70 years old. The unidentified minor was the first person under the age of 18 to die from coronavirus in the county. One was from West Adams and had underlying health conditions.

Health officials in New York City and Los Angeles are recommending that doctors avoid testing patients, except in cases where a test result would significantly change the course of treatment.

The health department is aware of numerous additional tests that have been sent to state and private labs from medical providers across the valley and is anticipating additional COVID-19 cases to come in.

"This is a devastating reminder that COVID-19 affects people of all ages", said Barbara Ferrer, the director of the county Public Health Department, according to Fox News affiliate KTTV.

As of Tuesday, at least 53,660 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the United States, and 703 people have died, according to a tracker maintained by researchers at Johns Hopkins University.

"While Public Health is doing everything possible to mitigate the impact of this disease in our community, we can only flatten the curve if EVERYONE takes social distancing seriously and adheres to all isolation and quarantine orders issued by our Health Officer".
