Benzema has been capped 81 times for France, and was an integral part of Deschamps' plans, but broke his former manager's trust when he was believed to have played a role in the attempted blackmail of then teammate Mathieu Valbuena.

Benzema sought to clarify his comments on Monday, stating that he had also talked up Giroud's strengths and adding that the same comparison could be used between himself and ex-Brazil superstar Ronaldo.

Real Madrid's Karim Benzema said "don't confuse Formula One with karting" as the exiled French striker dismissed comparisons to countryman Olivier Giroud.

"Some people only took away things about Giroud and Formula 1 [from the live broadcast], but they didn't remark what I said about what he'd brought to the French national team,"Benzema said in another video".

Asked about the Chelsea forward during a question and answer session on Instagram on Sunday night, Benzema said: "You can't confuse a Formula One vehicle with a go-kart, and I'm being kind". That is what I think, that is the truth and it is like that.

He also played every match at the World Cup and although he failed to find the target in Russian Federation, his team came home with the trophy. That's the way it is.

Giroud, who has scored 39 goals in 97 appearances for France, has started just five games for Chelsea in the Premier League in 2019-20.

Benzema has scored 19 goals in 32 appearances for Real Madrid this season while Giroud has largely been a back-up player for Chelsea, despite a decent run of form in February.
