The Santa Clara County Health Department confirmed a man has tested positive for the coronavirus. She said she was not surprised that Santa Clara County might have the first confirmed case because it is the most populous county in the Bay Area, and many residents travel internationally for business or personal reasons.

A husband and wife, both 57 years old, contracted 2019-nCoV after the husband recently returned from Wuhan, China.

"Both patients have not left their home since returning from China", county health officials said. He has been self-isolating since he returned from a trip to Wuhan on January 24, officials say. "We are grateful that this young man is recovering and sought medical attention immediately, " Massachusetts Public Health Commissioner Monica Bharel said in the statement. Two others have been identified in nearby Santa Clara County.

Santa Clara County health officials say the patient will remain in self-quarantine at home while investigators begin to make contact with anyone with whom the patient came in contact.

Health officials also ask that people stay home when they are sick and avoid contact with sick people.

Those people, along with the few members of his household, will have to undergo a 14-day quarantine.

The virus has infected nearly 10,000 people worldwide and killed more than 200.

Wuhan in Hubei Province is the epicenter of the virus outbreak, but a number of new cases have apparently been reported in other parts of China, prompting officials to place lockdowns on cities outside of Hubei. The first death outside China from the new virus was recorded Sunday in the Philippines.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) informed county health officials of the case Sunday morning, said Sara Cody, health officer of the Public Health Department of the County of Santa Clara.
