The British royal family wished Prince Andrew a happy 60 birthday on social media, and followers reacted with horror.

In a statement released through Buckingham Palace, Prince Andrew said he "unequivocally regret (s) my ill-judged association with Jeffrey Epstein".

Prince Andrew, the Duke of York who has been in the news lately for all the wrong reasons celebrated his 60th birthday on February 19.

Flags on government buildings are usually changed to the Union Jack on these occasions, but were now not required for the prince after he stepped back from public life over the furore surrounding his friendship with convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

It was originally thought that the Duke would have a significant celebration to celebrate the landmark birthday, with the Queen and members of his family attending.

Royal watchers spotted that unlike in previous years, the message came without an "HRH" prefix to the Duke of York's title.

Such muted celebrations are far removed from the fanfare typically enjoyed by Andrew and other senior royals on their milestone birthdays.

Meanwhile Sarah Ferguson, 60, shared a photo of her ex-husband relaxing at home with two dogs, alongside an unusually subdued message. As is his older brother, Prince Charles.

It is still expected that his birthday will be marked by the ringing of bells at Westminster Abbey. This is after people and the government expressed their anger after the royal family's attempt to fly Union Flags on government buildings and other halls in time for his birthday.

The abbey also rings the bells for the Queen's birthday, as well as that of the Duke of Edinburgh, their children, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their children.

The duke deferred his promotion to admiral.

Despite rumors about Prince Andrew no longer having the rights to use his HRH title, a Palace spokeswoman exclusively told Daily Star Online that the tweet "followed their house style".
