The doctor said the USA needs to employ new strategies to blunt impact of disease and slow spread after global reports of additional cases occurring without any known source of exposure in Italy and South Korea.

On Tuesday, US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention experts warned Americans of the coming outbreak. It's unknown how the patient got the virus.

"At this time, the patient's exposure is unknown", the CDC said in a statement. As a result, we have very few cases in the United States and no spread in the community. It is also warning that travellers from Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand who develop symptoms of cough or fever or shortness of breath within 14 days of returning the United Kingdom should contact the NHS by phone. "It's also possible, however, that the patient may have been exposed to a returned traveler who was infected".

"As we regularly handle patients with infectious diseases, we have robust infection control protocols in place to handle this patient and others with more frequently seen infectious diseases". The patient didn't have a close contact with a known case or a travel history to China, the state said, a sign that health workers are examining the patient's history to try and find out how they may have caught the virus and whether other people may be infected without knowing it.

"We have been anticipating the potential for such a case in the U.S., and given our close familial, social and business relationships with China, it is not unexpected that the first case in the USA would be in California", Sonia Angell, the director of the California Department of Public Health, said in a statement.

CDPH says the risk to the general public remains low, and that they are assessing the situation as it evolves.

Since Jan. 31, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has had to monitor a total of 347 people. And on Wednesday, President Trump called a press conference to announce Vice President Mike Pence would lead the nation's response.

Since the infection originated in Wuhan, China in December, authorities and governments around the world have taken a slew of measures, including travel restrictions, to contain the outbreak, but the virus has proved tricky and has spread rapidly across the globe, spanning over two dozen countries. Almost 10% - 774 people who contracted SARS - died, according to the World Health Organization.

Globally, more than 81,000 people have a confirmed case of the coronavirus with a worldwide mortality rate of 3.4%, according to the World Health Organization.

Top health officials in the USA have warned Americans to brace for the "inevitable" spread of the coronovirus disease that is sweeping the world. South Korea has reported 1,146 cases, while Italy has 322.

Dr. Nancy Messonnier with the CDC said it is not a matter of if, but when the new virus will spread in the US and how many Americans will have severe illness.

In the United States, 57 people have been infected so far, with no deaths reported so far.
