Most of the deaths in China have been in Wuhan and the rest of surrounding Hubei province, much of which has been under lockdown for nearly two weeks.

With Wuhan and some other cities in virtual lockdown, travel severely restricted and China facing increasing worldwide isolation, fears of wider economic disruption are growing.

Guwahati: In Hong Kong hundreds of hospital workers have gone on strike, demanding the border with landmass China be completely closed to decrease the risk of the rapidly spreading coronavirus.

The Hong Kong death took to 427 the toll from the virus, including a man who died in the Philippines last week after visiting Wuhan, the central Chinese city at the epicenter of the outbreak.

The other countries where coronavirus cases have been reported are Japan (20), Thailand (19), Singapore (18), South Korea (15), Hong Kong (15), Australia (12), Taiwan (11), the U.S. (11), Germany (10), Malaysia (eight), Macao (eight), Vietnam (eight), France (six), UAE (five), Canada (four), Italy (two), the United Kingdom (two), India (two), Philippines (two), Russian Federation (two), Cambodia (one), Finland (one), Nepal (one), Sri Lanka (one), Spain (one) and Sweden (one).

The Hong Kong leader announced the latest closure of the city's borders with mainland China but still stopped short of the total shutdown demanded by public hospital workers who vowed to escalate a strike they began on Monday.

"Because some medical staffs have not returned to work, hospital services in Hong Kong and many patients in critical condition are affected", Lam said at a press conference on Tuesday.

Restrictions have also been imposed far from the epicentre.

About 90 percent of the city's food is imported, with the bulk coming from the mainland, according to official data.

Another city in Zhejiang province, nine-million-strong Wenzhou, enacted the same measure at the weekend.

"Playing mahjong outside is banned during the epidemic", said a voice from the drone.

A second makeshift hospital is due to open later this week.

Japan has quarantined a cruise ship carrying 3,711 people and was testing those on board for the new coronavirus Tuesday after a former passenger was diagnosed with the illness in Hong Kong.
