Williams wristed a shot inside the post to the right of Thatcher Demko, giving the Hurricanes a 2-1 edge in the shootout. Williams also scored the shootout victor in his first game back on January 19 against the New York Islanders.

Andrei Svechnikov scored his 20th goal for the Hurricanes (30-19-3), who have won three of their past four games. He got his team on the board 4:25 into the opening period when he collected a loose puck in the slot, spun off a defender and roofed a shot past James Reimer. The fact they didn't leave empty handed after twice trailing in the game including in the third period allows the Canucks to take momentum from their performance as they move on to Boston on Tuesday night.

The Canucks have gone 13-13-1 away from home. "I thought it was a pretty intense game, probably fitting that it went into overtime and then a shootout".

Carolina is 3-1 in four games since Williams rejoined the team. Pesce collapsed immediately to the ice, which was soaked with blood before he could rush off to the locker room for treatment.

Brind'Amour said it appeared that the puck hit Pesce in a vein in a spot that had no padding.

"When I saw his hand, I said, 'I don't want to see that, ' because it was bleeding so much", Svechnikov said. He scored the third goal "Hurricanes" in the match and scored his 46 points for the club.

The Canucks weren't going to win every game they played the rest of the way - it only felt that way at times.

"We battled hard after playing yesterday", Myers said. While the Canucks didn't take two points out of PNC Arena, they were able to collect a single point and add it to their total to keep them atop the Pacific Division. Nelson has never broken 30 goals or 60 points in a season but is on pace to do both this season on the back of a career-best 2.72 shots per game rate. The Canucks selected Hughes seventh overall in the 2018 National Hockey League draft.

Vancouver heads into a matchup against Carolina as winners of five games in a row. Martin Necas has scored three goals over the last 10 games for Carolina.

They will have a hard path ahead of them as they head on their western road trip, playing all four games against teams that are now in a playoff position.
