A US TV host has apologised to Joker star Joaquin Phoenix after appearing to mock a scar on his upper lip. This particular episode aired on January 7 during Wendy's "Hot Topics" segment where she came to Beyonce's defense for refusing to stand during the announcement of Phoenix's Golden Globes Best Actor Award acceptance speech.

"I want to apologize to the cleft community and in Beau's honor, our show is donating to [Operation Smile] and [American Cleft Palate -Craniofacial Association] and encourage our Wendy Watchers to learn more and help support the cleft community", she tweeted.

"He's got that good nose that dips way down and he's happy with, so am I", she said, before commenting on the scar above his lip.

According to the NHS, a cleft lip and palate is the most common facial birth defect in the United Kingdom, affecting around 1 in every 700 babies. Famously, Williams got into a feud with 50 Cent, née Curtis Jackson, over the strained relationship he has with one of his sons.

"I find it to be very attractive", she added.

She then hooked her finger in her lip to imitate the common birth defect. The condition requires surgical correction at birth.

Social media is not feeling Wendy Williams' latest gaffe.

British TV personality Carol Vorderman, 59, who says she is an "ambassador for the Cleft Lip and Palate Association", also tweeted her disgust at Williams' remarks. "Cleft lip, cleft palate".

Canadian footballer Adam Bighill who was born with cleft lips and also has a child with the condition has demanded an apology from Wendy Williams for the past five days. "Have you any idea the pain and operations a child with cleft must go through as they grow?"
