The Best Reactions to Monday’s Oscar Nominations

Australian actresses Toni Collette, 47, and Eliza Scanlen, 21, also missed out on nods in the same category for their performances in Knives Out and Little Women.

Another Netflix movie, "Marriage Story", received six nominations - Best Picture, Actor in a Leading Role (Adam Driver), Actress in a Leading Role (Scarlett Johansson), Actress in a Supporting Role (Laura Dern), Original Screenplay (Noah Baumbach) and Original Score (Randy Newman).

Vancouver-born production designer Dennis Gassner, who won an Oscar in 1992 for Bugsy, earned his seventh best-production-design nomination for his work on director Sam Mendes's British war epic 1917.

There are two parts to the announcement: the first will include Supporting Actor/Actress, Costume Design, and Film Editing; Best Picture, Directing, Documentaries, and Leading Actor/Actress nominations will be announced in the second segment.

Renee Zellweger, who has swept the best actress nominations so far during this awards season, headed the best actress Oscar shortlist thanks to her acclaimed turn as showbiz legend Judy Garland in "Judy". Nominating "Dolemite is My Name" for Best Picture, for instance, would have been a nice grace note. The 71-year-old was last nominated 17 years ago for a supporting role in About Schmidt, and was a leading-actress victor in 1991 for Misery.

While Awkwafina may have picked up a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, she was unable to get even a nomination for her role in The Farewell at the Oscars.

Only one of the 20 acting nominees was a person of colour and that was Cynthia Erivo for her lead role as anti-slavery activist Harriet Tubman in Harriet.

On Jan. 8, the Academy revealed this year's ceremony will run without a host. It's the kind of story we don't see often enough and it's exactly what Michelle and I hope to achieve with Higher Ground.

In the documentary category, "American Factory" - which follows a US Rust Belt factory reopened by a Chinese billionaire - picked up a nomination for its well-known producers.

"The Irishman" helped Netflix to 24 nominations - the first time it has ever topped the studio count.

"Congrats to the incredible filmmakers and entire team!" he wrote.
