Quebec can develop its economy and fight climate change, Legault says

The president, who has pulled the United States out of the 2015 Paris climate accord, has traded barbs with Thunberg on social media.

"Let's be clear. We don't need a 'low carbon economy.' We don't need to 'lower emissions.' Our emissions have to stop", Thunberg said. "We've been talking about it for a while, and hopefully we can get something done".

The forum is sounding alarm bells on climate change.

"Europe and America are moving slightly apart from each other".

Thunberg, in typically uncomprising comments made at either end of Trump's appearance, accused the elite Davos crowd of "empty words and promises" that amounted to doing nothing about climate change. Some are calling for significant policy changes to deal with climate change. The long-time US allies ultimately did just that, last week.

"We are all fighting for the environment and climate".

Her remarks contrasted with those of Trump. Most of the companies subject to that tax are American. Oil and gas executives are scheduled to meet for a private dinner tonight in Davos, in which climate change is expected to be a top topic of behind-the-doors discussion, according to an executive who planned to attend the dinner and asked not to be named as it's a private event.

"Any plan or policy of yours that doesn't include radical emissions cuts-at the source, starting today-is completely insufficient", she said. "The American dream is back, bigger, better and stronger than before", he said. "That is without a doubt adding complexity to business in general".

Ivanka Trump declined to answer questions from CNN about her father's impeachment trial, despite having several opportunities to do so.

Trump has sought to highlight his trade and economic victories to contrast the impeachment proceedings.

The president's record on the environment is under attack from Democratic challengers ahead of November elections. Wages in much of western Europe are the same, or even higher, than they are in the United States, making the economies more of an even playing field.

Good morning from Davos, where the second day of the World Economic Forum is getting underway.

In his formal address at Davos, Trump dismissed climate change concerns as overly alarmist. He stressed countries should be free to make their own decisions.

"The perennial prophets of doom" with "predictions of apocalypse" must be rejected he said, referring to them as "the heirs of yesterday's foolish fortune tellers".
