"After she goes and studies economics in college she can come back and explain that to us", Mnuchin said.

Steven Mnuchin dismissed Greta Thunberg, saying, "Who is she?".

In response to a question about Ms Thunberg's call for fossil fuels to be scrapped, he said: "Is she the chief economist?"

Over the past year, Thunberg has taken issue with many aspects of US policy, not least President Donald Trump´s decision to pull the country out of the Paris accord to limit global warming.

"So either you tell us how to achieve this mitigation or explain to future generations and those already affected by the climate emergency why we should abandon our climate commitments", she said.

To her supporters around the world, Thunberg has become a role model, not least for her criticism of USA policy, particularly President Donald Trump´s decision to pull the country out of the Paris accord to limit global warming.

"If you don't have an economics degree like Greta, they'll mock you for not having one". "I wonder, what will you tell your children was the reason to fail and leave them facing the climate chaos you knowingly brought upon them?"

"Haters gonna hate & deniers will deny".

Thunberg has repeatedly criticised top industrial nations for not doing enough to address the crisis.

He called for 2020 to be "the year that we put ourselves on the right track" and for the private sector to "lead the world out of the approaching catastrophe into which we have engineered ourselves".

"Immediately end all fossil fuel subsidies and immediately and completely divest from fossil fuels".

"We don't want these things done by 2050, or 2030, or even 2021, we want this done now", said Thunberg.

Mnuchin said it's an "absolute priority" for President Donald Trump and that he expects to complete it "within this year".

For the president's part, during his prepared speech at the summit, he attacked climate activists, presumably including Thunberg who was in the audience, as "perennial prophets of doom". "Who is she, I'm confused". "I've always anxious about the fact that so often, in terms of humanity, we leave things too late so you have to hit a brick wall and experience a catastrophe before anything happens".

The Prince of Wales has always been a passionate advocate for the environment and conservation in his own right, and said Greta, who has inspired a global climate movement over the last few years, is "remarkable".
