The Department of Health's weekly influenza report says six more people died for the week ending January 18, including the child, bringing the death toll to 31 so far.

In a statement Thursday afternoon, DPH officials said the teen had tested positive for influenza B.

Adults 65 and older, those at risk of stroke, pregnant women and young children are considered at high risk for the flu.

"I feel enormous sorrow for the family of this child", Bharel said in a statement. We encourage everyone to get the flu vaccine not only to protect the individual but also to protect the weaker.

Another child death due to flu complications has Pierce County health officials urging people to get the flu shot.

Last season, four MA residents under age 18 died after contracting the flu, the statement said.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention said there have been at least 13 million cases of the flu in the United States, 120,000 hospitalizations and more than 6,600 deaths this season. "The flu season began early this year and took off aggressively" said Dr.William Schaffner, medical director for the national foundation for infectious Diseases. "People also need to do not forget to wash their hands, cover their coughs and sneeze and stay home when they are sick to limit the spread of diseases".

The number of people with a flu like disease were about the same as past year.
