NASA graduates 11 astronauts eligible for lunar missions

The rollout came after several weeks of testing and check-outs following NASA's declaration of "core stage complete" during a December 9 Artemis Day celebration at Michoud. It has since been modified and extended by several meters to accommodate the SLS core stages.

The core stage of the huge rocket being built to take the first woman to the Moon has left its factory in New Orleans for MS, where it will undergo its final testing before its first launch. SLS will be the most powerful rocket ever built for deep-space missions.

Part of the group's training therefore included studying the building blocks of that program, which are still being developed: the Space Launch System rocket, the Orion crew capsule and the gateway space station. "The SLS rocket was built to deliver American astronauts and maximum payloads to the Moon and deep space destinations".

The main stage, measuring 212 feet (65 meters) from end to end and more than 27 feet (8 meters) in diameter, was transported like a giant carnival auto from the Michoud assembly center in east New Orleans to the barge that was the Workers took pictures.

The roughly 1.3-mile trip from the Michoud factory to the barge's dock is just the start of the SLS flight hardware's journey. Called the Green Run Test, the occasion will involve topping the center off with fuel and lighting stage's four principle motors, similarly as they would during flight.

The rocket's first launch, which shall be unmanned, is about for 2020 at Nasa's Kennedy Area Centre in Florida.

Nasa's Area Launch System, or SLS, is a complicated launch vehicle that may "present the muse for human exploration past Earth's orbit", in line with the house company.

The preliminary configuration for what SLS can carry previous low-Earth orbit and on to the moon is greater than 26 metric tons, with a last configuration of a minimum of 45 metric tons. SLS is the only rocket that can send Orion, astronauts and supplies to the Moon on a single mission.
