"It would not be appropriate for the president to seek to call witnesses" to try and criticize former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter ahead of the 2020 election, Schiff suggested to CBS News on Monday night.

In his request, Bondy outlined several examples of why the attorney general should step back, including his involvement in President Donald Trump's Ukraine policy - as Barr was named during the president's July 25 call with the Ukraine that sparked the impeachment storm on Capitol Hill.

The scandal that precipitated the impeachment process, however, initially began with questions of Hunter Biden's employment as a board member at the Ukrainian energy company, Burisma Holdings, while his father, Joe Biden, was vice president and handling Ukraine policy for the Obama administration.

Schiff, who was a former prosecutor, added that the "only goal in putting him on their list is they wish to trade material witnesses, like Mr. Bolton and Mulvaney and others for immaterial ones" such as the Bidens.

"Is this about hiding the evidence from the American people?", Schiff said, adding, "This is not the fair trial the American people want, it's not the fair trial the American people deserve".

Decorum rules dictate that senators will not be permitted to talk or use electronic devices during arguments. Democrats allege that Trump withheld congressionally approved military aid to Kyiv in exchange for politically advantageous investigations into the Bidens, which Trump and Zelensky have both denied. Why are we saying with all the evidence that they have accumulated in the house is not admissible right at the start? Wallace asked during an appearance on Fox News.

The House impeachment team and Trump's lawyers exchanged a series of legal briefs over the weekend, previewing what their arguments will be in the trial.

"That means, if the prosecution gets a witness, the defense gets a witness", Cruz said Sunday.

Trump insists that Biden removing a prosecutor who was looking into potential corruption regarding Hunter's position was a conflict of order the then-vice president used to prevent him son from getting into trouble.

'The President of the United States has privileges and powers that no other person has. "The organizing resolution released tonight includes this step, and overall, it aligns closely with the rules package approved 100-0 during the Clinton trial".
