The DPA news agency and Bild newspaper both reported six people had died in the shooting.

Six people have been killed and several injured after a shooting in southwestern Germany.

A suspect was arrested shortly after the shooting, which took place at 12:45 p.m. (1145 GMT) Friday near the town's train station, police said.

Others are believed to have been killed in the incident, police said, with the authorities still responding to the shooting.

Police confirmed that a few others have been seriously injured and that the suspect has been arrested.

"Police are working on the basis that the perpetrator knew the victims and that some were direct relatives", said Al Jazeera's Dominic Kane, reporting from Berlin.

Rot am See is located 135 km (84 miles) southeast of Frankfurt, close to the medieval town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. But he could not confirm reports of six people killed.
