CAPTAIN MARVEL Sequel Moving Forward Without Original's Writer/Directors

The directing tandem of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck directed the origin story of the first film (which co-starred Samuel L. Jackson) working off of a screenplay they wrote with Geneva Robertson-Dworet. Marvel Studios is apparently seeking a new female director for this sequel. Marvel Studios has tapped rising writer Megan McDonnell, a staff writer on the upcoming Disney+ series WandaVision, to pen the script for the sequel to the Brie Larson-starring superhero film. Captain Marvel was the MCU's first movie with a leading lady as the primary protagonist.

Captain Marvel 2 is being primed for a 2022 release date, according to The Hollywood Reporter. There were also plenty of the expected sequels that were announced along the way like a new Thor, Black Panther and Doctor Strange movie. Instead, the studio has tapped WandaVision series scribe Megan McDonnell as the new Captain Marvel 2 writer, and is now on the hunt for a female director as the sequel flies closer to its prospective 2022 release date.

Marvel is now eyeing a 2022 release date for Captain Marvel 2. That the film made over $1 billion at the box office made it rather surprising that there seemingly weren't any plans in place for another.

Marvel is moving the action from the 1990s to the present day with scribe Megan McDonnell. 2019's Captain Marvel saw Danvers (Larson) become one of the world's most powerful heroes after she survived an alien engine explosion.

As one of the few cosmic Marvel superheroes, another trip into the stars would be very welcome in Captain Marvel 2, especially when Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is still years away.
