United States prosecutors have obtained evidence indicating that Jeff Bezos' girlfriend, Lauren Sanchez, sent her brother text messages that were laterpublished in the National Enquirer in its story about their affair, according to the Wall Street Journal. The National Enquirer then reportedly also used the personal chats for its article about Bezos' extramarital affair which was published a year ago.

The sensational claim comes days after Bezos's much publicised India visit with Sanchez. Later, he also attended a business summit.

Bezos in February past year accused the publisher of National Enquirer, an American tabloid published by American Media Inc. The U.S. attorney's office has also been investigating whether Mr. Bezos' phone was hacked, according to the people.

Michael Sanchez declined to comment to the Wall Street Journal on the texts or his interactions with American Media.

Bezos had in February 2019 accused the newspaper's owner of trying to blackmail him with the threat of publishing "intimate photos" he allegedly sent to Sanchez unless he said in public that the tabloid's reporting on him was not politically motivated.

Bezos' affair returned to news this week when The Guardian reported that it was "highly probable" that Saudi Arabia hacked Bezos' phone in May 2018, which the Saudi government has denied.

The UK newspaper The Guardian reported that the "encrypted message from the number is believed to have included a malicious file that infiltrated the phone of the world's richest man, according to the results of digital forensic analysis".

People close to Bezos have suggested that Saudi Arabia was behind the leak of his private information. Calling the reports "absurd" Saudi Embassy in Washington said, "We call for an investigation on these claims so that we can have all the facts out".
