House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has announced that the Democrats will pursue articles of impeachment against President Trump.

Jung-min, things are really heating up in Washington.

Nancy Pelosi, the most senior Democrat in the House of Representatives, said that after more than two months of an inquiry, the party would table articles. The president has engaged in abuse of power, undermining our national security and jeopardising the integrity of our elections. Trump admitted that he had brought up Biden's family during the call but told reporters that he did so because "we don't want our people like Vice President Biden and his son creating to the corruption already in the Ukraine".

She said that's why she has asked for the House Judiciary Committee chairman to proceed with the impeachment draft, . which is expected to be put up for a vote before Christmas.

Meanwhile, Mr Trump's team fanned out across the Capitol with Vice President Mike Pence meeting with House Republicans and White House officials conferring with Senate Republicans to prepare for what could be the first presidential impeachment trial in a generation.

With a majority of members in the Democratic-controlled chamber already expressing intent to back the deeply divisive procedure, Trump is likely to become just the third president in USA history to be impeached by the House of Representatives. "Our democracy is what is at stake".

They argue that Trump abused the power of his office by putting personal political gain over national security interests, engaging in bribery by holding out $400 millionin military aid thatCongress had approved for Ukraine; and then obstructing Congress by stonewalling the investigation.

"They have no Impeachment case and are demeaning our Country", President Trump said.

They allege the president withheld nearly $400 million (€360 million) in security assistance to pressure the government there into announcing an investigation involving former Vice President Joe Biden to benefit Trump's 2020 re-election campaign. Trump tweeted that he welcomes a "fair trial in the Senate".

Speaking in somber tones against a backdrop of American flags, the California Democrat said Trump undermined U.S. security and jeopardized the integrity of the country's elections by pressuring a foreign government for help in next year's presidential campaign.

At a town hall late Thursday on CNN, Pelosi said she would have no regrets if impeachment ended up helping Trump's re-election effort.

"You have to ask him", Trump said. That could produce an additional article of obstruction not only of Congress, but also of justice.

"If we allow a president to be above the law, we do so surely at the peril of our republic", added the speaker, Trump's chief nemesis in Congress.

The GOP Leader of the House, Kevin McCarthy, said Pelosi is more concerned about tearing the president down than building the country up. White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham tweeted that the "Democrats should be ashamed".

The defiant president continued his online rant, saying Democrats were seeking to impeach him "over NOTHING".

A vote in the House judiciary committee, which is in charge of drafting the articles, could come next week. The committee set a Monday hearing to receive the Intelligence Committee's report outlining the findings against the president.
