And he has been rewarded for his efforts, being named as the UK's Official Number 1 Artist of the Decade by The Official Charts Company.

"Ed truly has dominated this decade and is a worthy recipient of this wonderful new award", he said.

The tune which spent eight weeks at the top of the Official UK Singles Chart heads up the 2019 MTV Video Play Awards which is based on cumulative on-air music video plays from January 1st - December 4th 2019.

Commenting on his achievement Ed said "thank you to everyone who's supported me over the past 10 years, especially my awesome fans". In addition, he spent the most weeks at number one across both charts, at 79 weeks. And Sir Paul McCartney was named the biggest albums act of all time with a total of 22 No 1s on the chart.

'Today, he is firmly established among the highest level of global music superstars'.

Ed Sheeran stormed the US charts on Monday, taking the top spot on the Billboard 200 with his new album "Divide" and also topping the digital songs chart with lead single "Shape of You". Only Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard and Rihanna have a higher tally than his 1,002 weeks. His four studio albums each topped the British charts.

The accolade for the Framlingham singer-songwriter has been announced by the Official Charts Company. It's no surprise then that three of Ed's albums feature in the Top 10 biggest albums of the decade, led by X at Number 3 (3.5 million chart sales).

His U.S. success follows an even bigger start for "Divide" in his native Britain, where Sheeran, 26, had the fastest selling album by a solo male artist in British chart history on Friday.
