According to Deadline, Disney's 20th Century Fox is moving forward with a new "Planet of the Apes" movie with "Maze Runner" director, Wes Ball.

Disney acquired the rights to the Planet of the Apes franchise when they purchased Fox Studios. "It is unclear whether the latest Apes project is meant to be a new reboot or an extension of the previous film series".

Little has thus far been revealed about the plot, whether or not it would share continuity with earlier entries in the franchise, and even embody some of the similar actors.

One of the interesting things about the original films is that actor Roddy McDowall ended up playing both Cornelius and Caesar, which could establish a reason to have Andy Serkis to come back and play a completely different ape character in the future.

Disney is expanding the "Planet of the Apes". Still, Matt Reaves is now busy prepping "The Batman" for Warner Brothers, so he will be unavailable to continue the series as a director. The film was a massive success and started the franchise which includes four more films, television series, animated series, a Tim Burton-remake and a reboot franchise.

It's now unclear whether Ball's Planet of The Apes (whatever it ends up being called) will continue the story established in the recent Apes trilogy, which came to an end back in 2017.

The Maze Runner's Wes Ball attached to helm new Planet of the Apes!

2011 marked the beginning of a trilogy of prequel films that began with Rupert Wyatt's Rise of the Planet of the Apes and continued with 2014's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and 2017's War for the Planet of the Apes.

Based on a novel of the same name, the original "Planet of the Apes" movie chronicles the journey of an astronaut who accidentally lands on a planet where an advanced ape civilization is ruling over primitive humans.
