Spurred by the success of Echo smart speakers and the growing smart home market in India, Amazon has come up with a portable Echo Input speaker for Indian customers.

It's also more expensive than the $49.99 / £49.99 / AU$79 Echo Dot, although the convenience of portability could justify the new Input's relatively high price.

The company said the Echo Input Portable Smart Speaker Edition (which remains a mouthful) shares the same "hardware architecture" as the Echo Input, a device it launched a year ago that does not feature a speaker. The Echo can last 11 hours of standby on battery (but to extend battery life, Amazon recommends that you plug it in when youre not using it).

Talking about the new smart speaker, Parag Gupta, Head of Amazon Devices in India said, "Customers in India love Alexa, and told us that they want to carry their Echo device from room to room so that they can have an uninterrupted hands-free Alexa experience..."

The device brings the same Alexa-powered capabilities in a fresh new package but addresses one of the most common problems associated with previous Echo devices: lack of portability.

Just like other Alexa speakers, you can control your IoT home products with voice commands. When we find out for sure, we'll let you know.

Since its launch in 2017, Amazon's Echo series has changed the way how Indians used to think of speakers.

Amazon's Echo ecosystem is expanding at a rapid pace and the company wants to put its smart assistant, Alexa, into everything from cars to household appliances. It is originally priced at Rs 5,999. "We're excited to offer this new Alexa experience in India, and we can not wait to see how our Indian customers enjoy the flexibility of a portable Alexa in their homes".

With a portable speaker that packs in a 4,800 mAh battery with a promised backup time of 10 hours on continuous playback, Amazon is trying to target the millennial users who like to carry their speakers around while playing music. It is a rechargeable battery and you get a microUSB based charging port at the back. It will be initially available only in India at an introductory price of ₹4,999 with pre-order starting on 4 December on and the final release is expected on 18 December.
