With six million units sold, Sword & Shield are already the eighth best-selling Switch game (if treated as a single title). 2 million of those units were sold here in the US.

Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield are available now for Switch.

In its announcement today, Nintendo said that Pokemon Sword and Shield are now "among the fastest-selling Nintendo Switch games of all time", but didn't tell us where they specifically rank.

For an additional comparison, the 2013's Pokémon X and Y sold four million units across the globe in its first week, while last generation's Pokemon Sun and Moon reportedly sold 7.2m in its first week according to Eurogamer. Nintendo has announced that Pokemon Sword and Shield managed to sell 6 million units during launch weekend. That statement is carefully-worded - as a $60 game it seems to have made more money in the U.S. than any past Pokémon titles in its first week on sale, although a lot of them launched at a significantly cheaper RRP.

Games in the core Pokemon RPG series have sold more than 240 million units** worldwide since launching with the Pokemon Red Version and Pokemon Blue Version games in 1996. By teaming up with three other players locally or online*** in the new multiplayer co-op Max Raid Battles, players will face off against very big and super-strong Pokemon known as Dynamax Pokemon.
