'Multiple victims' in school shooting near Los Angeles

Some 2300 students attend the high school, which is made up of more than a dozen buildings.

Authorities did not release the teen's name, but said Thursday is his 16th birthday. He took out a handgun from backpack and shot five other students before shooting himself in the head, the captain said.

Four people from the school were transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital for treatment.

The suspect used was a.45 caliber semi-automatic pistol. One of those victims later died.

Another student who identified herself only as Pamela said Holt retrieved a first aid kit that was in the classroom and began treating the girl's wounds on her shoulder and torso.

The girls "held their composure despite being shot", said Dr. Boris Borazjani, a trauma surgeon at Providence Holy Cross Hospital.

Students described a chaotic scene at school after gunfire erupted.

"My worst nightmare actually came true", she said later as she left a nearby park with her father.

"At first he thought it was a graze" but later was told his friend had died, she said.

School officials are sending students to Central Park, where parents should meet them, the district said.

Sheriff's deputies arrived on the premises after responding to a call of a possible shooting at 7:38 a.m. local time.

Investigators will check rumors that the suspect may have posted threats on social media, county Undersheriff Tim Murakami said on Twitter.

She texted a choir and band teacher, and learned that a student who was in the choir teacher's classroom had been wounded.

Orandi said she Has heard about so many school shootings that she always assumed she'd panic in such a moment. One was a 14 year-old male and the other was a 16 year-old female.

"In speaking with staff and hearing reports, students reported they knew what to do and immediately went into lockdown mode", he said. Three other students are in stable condition and the suspect is in grave condition.

Larry Everhart, a grandfather of a Saugus High student, told KCBS that he was leaving his house to get coffee when he saw students running down his street screaming.

The scene at Saugus High School was reminiscent of other recent mass shootings at schools across the United States, including the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where a former student with an assault gun killed 17 people on 14 February 2018.

"We have received 2 patients in critical condition, 3 en route".

Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva tweeted that the suspect was in custody and was being treated at a hospital.

Police were called to Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, California, on Thursday morning (Friday morning NZ time).

Neighboring schools had been placed on lockdown, and the Sheriff's Department advised locals to avoid the area as police responded.
