Point penalty causes Roger Federer to lose his cool

Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas have played each other 4 times in the past.

Greek 21-year-old Tsitsipas came from a set down - having lost the opening three games in seven minutes - to beat the defending champion 3-6 7-5 6-3.

Djokovic sits at the top of the rankings at the moment but trails Rafa Nadal in the yearly standings and, with the Spaniard absent from Shanghai, had hoped to make up significant ground in China.

A handicap line can be considered, but given Tsitsipas' propensity to play tight sets, it would be much more risky than simply the match win position on Medvedev here.

"I knew if I keep playing the way I was playing in the first two sets I was going to have a chance in the third as well".

"He was backing up his serve with really good and aggressive first shots in the rally". Medvedev seems to be playing with huge amounts of confidence and I see him as the favorite to win this tournament. "I just gave him enough time to really dictate the play... and he deserved to win".

Until Friday's match, Djokovic had won 24 straight sets in Asia, a run that included last year's Shanghai Masters and the title in Tokyo last week.

Djokovic, Nadal, Federer, Medvedev, Thiem and Tsitsipas have booked their places for the ATP Finals, with two spots still up for grabs for the tournament in London.

Federer followed Djokovic out of the competition by losing a dramatic last eight clash 3-6 7-6 (7-5) 3-6 to Alexander Zverev.

Federer received a code violation for hitting a ball into the stands, and then received a point penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct after flicking a ball into the air when trailing 3-0 in the third set.

Tsitsipas now gets the red-hot Daniil Medvedev who ousted Fabio Fognini 6-3, 7-6 (4).

He said: "The five match points I had in the second set - them going away and still knowing I can win in three sets is very important, especially against someone like Roger because normally he doesn't let go of these kind of matches".

Tsitsipas smacked the ball out the court in a rage, before Medvedev sealed match in the 12th game of the second set.

Prior to Friday's match, Fognini said Medvedev was one of the most risky players to face. Zverev said Federer started to play better after his exchanges with the umpire. I thought he didn't show any frustrations or too much negativity.
