Biden had alternated between muted dismissals at a series of fundraisers and more aggressive public displays, urging reporters to "ask the right questions", promising he'd beat Trump "like a drum" and using a campaign rally in Reno, Nevada, to hammer the president.

Minutes after the former vice president's speech, the Biden campaign sent a fundraising email to supporters in which the candidate re-emphasized that "Trump should be impeached".

"We're not going to play Donald Trump's game", Kate Bedingfield, Biden's campaign manager, said on CNN Tuesday.

"We're not going to let Donald Trump pick the Democratic nominee for president", Biden declared.

Numerous other 19 Democratic 2020 candidates have long supported the opening of an impeachment inquiry into Trump, following the findings of former special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russia's interference into the 2016 election and links between the Trump 2016 campaign and Moscow.

Politifact and, organizations that Facebook works with for fact checking, debunked the 30-second ad soon after President Trump's camp distributed it. The call was part of a whistleblower's complaint against the president, which led to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's announcement late last month of a formal impeachment inquiry into Trump. Around a third said Trump's request was appropriate. "Respect the Constitution", Biden's account wrote, adding a taunt about Trump's tax returns.

Trump, his aides, and some State Department diplomats were involved with an effort to get Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to launch investigations into Biden's family and into a conspiracy theory believed by Trump about the political interference in the 2016 presidential race. "I think Rudy's got a story to tell. He's picked a fight with the wrong guy".

The former vice president had previously called for the president to be impeached if he would not comply with the impeachment inquiry underway by Democrats in the House of Representatives.

Trump has accused Biden of trying to stop an investigation into the Ukrainian gas company where his son, Hunter, was a board member.

Shortly before midnight, Trump highlighted an item from the Washington Examiner's Byron York showing Biden's lead in the Democratic race dwindling and questioning whether the former vice president should still be seen as the frontrunner for his party's 2020 nomination.

"If they do not do what we want, we've tremendous power", Trump mentioned.

In his speech, Biden noticeably did not mention the Senate or its potential role in deciding Trump's fate. "The world can't wait for America once again to lead a stable, peaceful worldwide order". That gave Biden no choice but to make his stance on impeachment clear, the aide says.

"He is commander in chief of the most powerful military in the history of the world", Biden said.
