Petr Cech has started a stunning new sporting venture after signing for ice hockey club Guildford Phoenix until the end of the season.

In an official statement, the Blues clarified that he will only play for the Guildford Phoenix, when his schedule allows him to.

"I hope I can help this young team to achieve their goals for the season and try to win as many games as possible when I have the chance to play".

The 37-year-old took part in a training session with the Phoenix in August, posting a picture on Instagram of him playing goaltender.

Former Tottenham star Rafael van der Vaart made a switch from retired footballer to professional darts player earlier this year as he joined the British Darts Organisation.

The Czech shot-stopper, who works as the Technical and Performance Adviser at Chelsea, clarified on Twitter that his fledgling hockey career will not get in the way of his coaching duties.

"Luckily my job at Chelsea doesn't stop me in my spare time from playing the game I loved as a kid and which I've been playing for years", he said.

'When his Chelsea Football Club time table permits, he's ready to abet them in their league video games'.

He said: "The signing of Petr is massive for the Phoenix".

It's an unlikely transition, especially at this stage of his life, but Cech's agility and ability to read the play could serve him well in ice hockey.

His new side ply their trade in the National Ice Hockey League Division 2 - a far cry from his new role as a technical and performance advisor at Stamford Bridge.
