If this report proves correct, Abdul-Mateen would join the returning Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who portrayed the character Manta in Aquaman as well as the father of Lupita Nyong'o's character in the Jordan Peele movie Us, has reportedly been tapped for the secret lead role.

Lana Wachowski, the co-creator, co-writer, and co-director of The Matrix trilogy, will return to direct the sequel. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures will produce and globally distribute the film.

The Matrix 4 will likely begin production in early 2020. Wachowski will also co-write the script with Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell.

"We could not be more excited to be re-entering the Matrix with Lana", Warner Bros. The studio has recently seen the opportunity to ramp up development, with Reeves boasting a strong summer that included box office hits "John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum" and "Toy Story 4" in addition to a solid script from Wachowski.

Rumors have been speculating that a young Morpheus would be appearing in The Matrix 4, and the role was previously rumored to be a crucial part to the then uncertain sequel, with Michael B. Jordan being mentioned as a possible candidate.

Abdul-Mateen II is perhaps best known for his roles in Aquaman and Black Mirror, and is set to play a role in HBO's upcoming Watchmen as well.

Abdul-Mateen II recently joined the cast of Aaron Sorkin's "The Trial of the Chicago 7" as Black Panther activist Bobby Seale.

All three previous Matrix films, which were written and directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski, have collectively earned more than $1.6 billion. He will also star in Netflix's drama "All Day and a Night" alongside Jeffrey Wright. He's represented by WME and Anonymous Content.
