Spanish media reports said Marcelino had been at odds with team owners over planning for the season.

Valencia have sacked manager Marcelino and have replaced him with former Real Madrid assistant Albert Celades.

Sporting director Mateu Alemany is also expected to depart after an ongoing battle between club staff and owner Peter Lim.

According to "COPE Valencia" and other local media outlets, Peter Lim has made a decision to get rid of the manager who qualified for the Champions League for the second season running and won the Copa del Rey past year.

'The club would like to thank him for his work and dedication during his time at our entity and wish him success for the future'.

"Valencia CF have come to an agreement for the appointment of Albert Celades as first team coach, through to June 30 2021", a statement read.

Valencia have taken four points from three games this term but it was reported in Spain that Lim called club president Anil Murthy for an emergency meeting in Singapore on Wednesday after deciding to sack Marcelino.

Now Valencia, who had enjoyed a period of relative stability under the stewardship of Marcelino, will entrust the season to relative novice Celades, who has rarely been in the limelight but has plenty of experience as a number two to Lopetegui.

Marcelino's sacking comes at a vital time for Valencia, who are set to visit Barcelona this weekend following the conclusion of the worldwide break.
