Matic said he respected the decision but was determined to prove to the Norwegian manager that he belonged in the starting line-up.

The midfielder, who struggled more than most towards the end of last season, has not started any of Man United's opening four Premier League games of the 2019-20 campaign.

"I think you nearly have to write United off for the next two years, this team", added Scholes.

Real Madrid star Dani Carvajal revealed that he was aware of his team's efforts in signing Manchester United's Paul Pogba, although he feels that there is no point in dwelling on his club's failure to make that happen during the summer transfer window.

'But it wasn't the young players I was disappointed with, it was more the experienced players.

"The coach must opt for the team that will fight for the title and if he does not win, he bears the responsibility", Matic told reporters ahead of Serbia's European Qualifier against Portugal on Saturday, live on Sky Sports Premier League. "In order for me to play, one had to sit on the bench and accept that fact, and so do I now", the Serbia global added.

He told the players their performance was a "joke" and it was "embarrassing" how they were failing to finish teams off.

Fred has not featured for Manchester United this season and may have riled Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with his recent social media activity.

"Some players have come that will help us, like Hazard, (Eder) Militao, (Ferland) Mendy... and I think they will complement a great squad", Carvajal concluded.

He said: "I think you nearly have to write United off for the next two years - this team - until Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has cleared everything he wants out; has four or five transfer windows".

"We've seen over and over again how many mistakes experienced players are making, it's hard for young players to come into a team like that".

Manchester United will return to Premier League action after the worldwide break when they take on Leicester City in front of their home fans on Saturday 14 September.
