Israeli forces shoot dead Palestinian woman at West Bank checkpoint

A Palestinian woman was shot and killed by an Israeli guard when she threatened soldiers with a knife at the Qalandia checkpoint outside Jerusalem early Wednesday morning.

Video circulated on social media showed men with rifles confronting a woman.

"As a result of this, a shot was sacked at her leg, and she was injured", said the police in a statement.

The Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed later that the 50-year-old woman, who remained unidentified, succumbed to her wounds.

A number of local and global human rights groups have raised concerns that Israeli security forces have used excessive force when confronting Palestinians who carried out attacks or were suspected of doing so.

Israeli army said that the woman was shot after being discovered with a knife, attempting to stab an Israeli soldier.

Police distributed a picture of a yellow-handled knife they claimed she had held.

According to official Palestinian news agency WAFA, Israeli forces opened fire at the woman - who has not yet been identified - and wounded her even though she "posed no threat". This July, the Palestinian leader went one step further, announcing the suspension iof agreements, before Palestinian PM Mohammad Shtayyeh sovereignty over the entire West Bank a month later.
