Farmers affected by mental health issues urged to seek help

The WHO praised the strides being made globally in suicide prevention with the number of countries instituting national suicide prevention strategies having increased significantly since the organisation first published its report on global suicide in 2014.

The University of Windsor will also stage activities Tuesday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. inside the CAW Student Centre to provide information about the mental health support and services available on campus as part of suicide prevention awareness day.

IMO says it aims to help the local community to come together and shout loud about the importance of speaking up about suicide.

World Health Organization statistics show that close to 800,000 people die due to suicide every year, which is almost one person every 40 seconds, and for every suicide there are more than 20 suicide attempts.

Five months ago, fresh concerns were again raised about the impact of delays in accessing mental health services for those at risk of suicide, with a letter sent to the CMO by Belfast councillor Paul McCusker, who is also a healthcare professional. Although there was a slight increase in the numbers of Kent people taking their own lives (from 128 in 2017 to 137 in 2018), the three year average rates are falling across the county.

In the western Pacific, rates fell by almost 20%, while in Guyana the rate topped more than 30 per 100,000, making it the highest in the world.

A significant number of people contemplating suicide experience anxiety, depression, hopelessness and may feel that there is no other option. 6,507 suicides were registered last year, marking a 12 per cent rise on the previous year and the highest rate since 2002. Suicide deaths are preventable deaths. The need to create facilitated referral pathways and understand more about restricting access to means was recognised.

The WHO pointed to studies in Sri Lanka, where bans on pesticides have led to a 70 percent drop in suicides and an estimated 93,000 lives saved between 1995 and 2015. In the Republic of Korea - where the herbicide paraquat accounted for the majority of pesticide suicide deaths in the 2000s - a ban on paraquat in 2011-2012 was followed by a halving of suicide deaths from pesticide poisoning between 2011 and 2013.
