"He died at Sujay Hospital at around 9.30pm", a family friend told PTI.

Khayyam, 92, was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of Sujoy Hospital in suburban Juhu a few days ago due to breathing issues and other age-related illnesses. He was on ventilator for quite some time and he will be buried at the Four Bungalows graveyard on August 20th.

Mohammed Zahur Khayyam - who is known for composing music for superhit movies such as Kabhie Kabhie and Umrao Jaan - has passed away on Monday night. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also paid his tribute to the late music director through the medium of a tweet.

The musician had been awarded the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Padma Bhushan. He is survived by spouse Jagjit Kaur. "Great musician and a man with a kind heart, Khayyam sahab isn't with us anymore". Veteran Bollywood Singer Lata Mangeshkar has penned down a heartfelt note for Khayyam on her Twitter account.

ANI has now confirmed that the music composer is no more. I am so saddened to hear this, I can't put it in words. "I offer my humble tribute to him", she wrote. He started his career in music in Ludhiana at the age of 17. Khayyam was awarded the National Film Award for his work in Umrao Jaan.

Besides movies, the composer has also been equally instrumental in producing non-film songs - Paaon Padun Tore Shyam, Ghazab Kiya Tere Vaade Pe Aitbaar Kiya among others.
