Serena Williams, also the runner-up at Wimbledon each of the past two years, is trying to equal Margaret Court's mark for most major singles championships at 24.

Djokovic, the defending men's singles champion aiming to win a third Grand Slam in 2019, faces unheralded Roberto Carballes Baena first but could be set for a daunting run in NY.

Williams is a 23-time Grand Slam victor and lost in last year's final in controversial fashion to Osaka.

Tennis great Serena Williams is returning to Auckland with unfinished business at the ASB Classic.

The 37-year-old American has dropped her past three Grand Slam finals appearances, including last month to Simona Halep at Wimbledon and last year to Japan's Naomi Osaka at the US Open after a controversial game penalty for her tirade at umpire Carlos Ramos. They staged an epic five-set marathon in the Wimbledon final, which Djokovic won for his 16th Grand Slam title.

Novak Djokovic, the No 1 seed, begins the defense of his title against Spain's Roberto Carballes Baena.

If Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are to meet for the first time at a U.S. Open this year, it will have to be in the final.

Federer and No 2 seed Rafael Nadal have never played each other in NY and could do so this year only if both make the final.

Other interesting first-round matches on the men's side include an all-Canadian showdown between No 18 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov, and eighth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas against Andrey Rublev, who routed Federer last week in the Western & Southern Open. Nadal could potentially face fourth-seeded Dominic Thiem in the semifinals.
