Trump Wants Russia Back in G7

"The divorce was enacted when Ukraine was invaded".

For Japan, which hosted the Group of 20 meeting two months ago, the Biarritz meeting could see pressure, especially from France, to go against the wishes of the USA and offer support to strong G7 language on climate change in advance of next month's United Nations Climate Action Summit in NY.

Macron has maintained a testy relationship with Putin over the last two years but has also insisted that links should not be broken even at a time of rising tensions with the West.

Ukraine on the eve of the G7 summit in Biarritz informed all the key capitals of the world that there are no reasons for Russia's return to the G7.

Steffen Seibert, spokesman for the German government, said Germany opposed Russia's return to the G7.

Ironically, Russia held the G8 presidency in 2014 but a summit that it was preparing to hold in June that year in Sochi never took place as it was expelled from the group.

"If we could get India to adopt the G-7 priorities on climate, that G-7 would be useful", the diplomat said, noting that France "coordinated with Russian Federation, we are inviting India and we are going to China in November".

Moscow had joined the group in 1998 - when the G7 became the G8 - under the presidency of Boris Yeltsin as the West tried to anchor post-Soviet Russia into the worldwide community.

"In a calculated snub to other G-7 leaders, Trump plans to meet with new British Prime Minister Boris Johnson en route to the summit and to press him to proceed with a "no deal" Brexit", Stewart Patrick, a senior fellow in global governance and director of the International Institutions and Global Governance program at the Council on Foreign Relations, wrote in a research note earlier this week.

At this year's G7, and in response to the worldwide backlash against the adverse effects of globalization that has produced leaders like Trump and Johnson, France is making the fight against social and economic inequality due to a lack of opportunities and environmental degradation (including climate change), security and counterterrorism, digital development and artificial intelligence, and new partnerships with Africa, as the main themes of the summit. "I could certainly see it being the G8 again".

The French president said: "I know the points of disagreement with the US".

However, in Berlin Merkel also said progress would first be needed on Ukraine.
