Trump calls himself 'the chosen one'

Reports say that Trump told LaPierre "universal background checks" were "off the table", and LaPierre was pleased.

"As a Jewish American, I am dismayed that the President is attacking millions in the American Jewish community as unintelligent and disloyal", Luria said in a statement posted on Twitter.

President Donald Trump provided clarification following backlash over his comment where he suggested Jewish-Americans who vote for Democrats show "either a total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty".

Public safety and anti-gun groups are demanding Trump close a gaping loophole in federal laws which exempts private sellers of guns online and at gun shows from running background checks on buyers.

LaPierre and his group oppose even the slightest gun restrictions so they can be seen as fierce warriors to their members (and donors).

LocalDVM reports Manchin is suggesting Republicans in the House and Senate are considering support for gun control but can not risk it politically unless Trump shields them from the political fallout. I don't feel comfortable joking about any of the stuff I just listed out above, especially the rank antisemitism, but when you're in a situation that feels this hopeless it can help to make fun of it all.

Trump answered questions during a photo op with President Klaus Iohannis of Romania on Tuesday afternoon, and was asked about signals that he's backtracking on his calls for "strong background check" legislation that he made in the wake of the El Paso and Dayton mass shootings.

"We just talked about concepts", he said. But there are certain weaknesses. "And only weak people would say anything other than that".

"We also have to remember, the gun doesn't pull the trigger, a person does", he said.

The president himself argued that "we already have very serious background checks".

The president's position is crucial, because congressional Republicans, who count on gun rights supporters for votes, can not move on tougher firearms legislation without his support. Trump said, referencing Omar and Tlaib. And those folks are telling Trump, regularly and in grandiose terms, that he is in fact the Chosen One and has been anointed by God to be the president at this point in time.

"We're talking about background checks, and then all of a sudden we're talking about, let's take everybody's gun away".

The House Judiciary Committee said on Friday it would cut short its summer recess to meet on September 4 to begin considering new gun control legislation.

"We have a second amendment and our second amendment will remain strong".
